Cataract surgery is a common and effective procedure that can greatly improve your vision and quality of life.

It is a treatment often recommended when vision loss interferes with your daily activities, whether watching TV, reading the newspaper, or driving to work. However, in some cases, it may be necessary even if cataracts are not the primary cause of your vision problems, as they can obstruct a doctor’s ability to see into the back of the eye.

Whatever your case may be, you are sure to have some questions regarding your operation, like: How long does cataract surgery take? How long is the cataract surgery recovery process? Or, how soon can you drive after cataract surgery?

While each of these answers varies from cataract patient to cataract patient, there are some general guidelines that can help you understand what to expect from your cataract surgery.

How Long Does Cataract Surgery Take?

Cataract surgery is a relatively straightforward and routine procedure. In most cases, it takes about an hour to complete; however, some cataract surgeries can even be performed in 10 to 20 minutes. Our modern cataract surgery is routinely performed with small-incision microsurgery through a process known as phacoemulsification. The cataract removal and surgical processes are done using the smallest possible incision, and the removal of the lens material is accomplished using an ultrasonic probe. This procedure typically lasts about an hour and is relatively painless. After the surgery, you’ll likely spend some time in a recovery room to ensure there are no complications. Depending on the outcome, you should be prepared to spend anywhere from one to three hours at the ophthalmologist on the day of your appointment. It’s also important to arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure as you will not be able to drive immediately following the procedure. Having a friend or family member with you on the day of your surgery can help ensure a smooth and safe recovery.

How Long Does It Take for Cataract Surgery to Heal?

Everyone’s eyes are different, and because of that, the time it takes for cataract surgery to heal varies from person to person. Most patients find that their eye is fully healed about 8 weeks (or roughly 2 months) after the operation. It is common for patients to heal to a point where they obtain better vision within the first 24 hours of the procedure. You may also experience some common post-surgery symptoms, including itchiness, discomfort, and sensitivity to light and touch. These symptoms usually improve within two to three days. Your doctor will also schedule exams to check your progress. If you notice worsening symptoms such as increased vision loss, severe pain, floaters, or redness in your eye, contact your doctor immediately. Once your eye is completely healed, it may be time to schedule a regular eye appointment to determine if your vision has changed and whether you need a new prescription for glasses or contact lenses.

How Soon Can You Drive After Cataract Surgery?

While full healing from cataract surgery can take up to two months, many patients find that their vision improves enough to drive safely within 24 to 48 hours after the procedure.

In most cases, doctors will advise you to wait at least 24 hours before attempting to drive. They may also suggest limiting other physical activities like swimming, putting on makeup, or lifting anything more than 10 lbs. for one to two weeks after surgery.

If you are still concerned about your ability to drive, you may want to wait for your follow-up appointment with your ophthalmologist before getting behind the wheel. During this appointment, your doctor will assess your vision to ensure it is safe for you to drive.

How Long Between Cataract Surgery on Each Eye?

Cataract surgery cannot be performed on both eyes at once, ensuring you are always able to have vision. Instead, it is carried out separately on each eye, with the surgery on the second eye usually scheduled about a month after the first.

This allows your first eye to heal and ensures that you maintain some level of vision during the recovery process. The surgery is normally performed on whichever eye is most impacted, allowing you to see better in the strongest eye while you recover.

Of course, no two eyes are the same, and the time between cataract surgeries can vary. In some cases, the second operation may be scheduled as soon as two weeks after the first, while in others, it may be delayed for up to six months. The timing depends on how long it takes for your first eye to heal and your individual needs.
