March marks Workplace Eye Wellness Month, dedicated to promoting awareness of the importance of safeguarding our vision. In today's fast-paced world, many of us spend a huge portion of our day staring at screens, whether it is for work or leisure. However, what often goes overlooked is the impact this screen time can have on our eyes. Matthew Duncan, OD, an expert in eye wellness, emphasizes the importance of taking care of our eyes, particularly in the workplace where visual demands can be high.

Work in a well-lit environment

One of the key factors Dr. Duncan highlights is the significance of appropriate lighting in workspaces. Poor lighting can strain our eyes, leading to discomfort and fatigue. Ensuring that your work environment is well-lit can help alleviate this strain.

Use non-glare or blue light filters

Another recommendation for those who require vision correction is using non-glare or blue light filters in conjunction with corrective lenses. These filters can help reduce eye strain caused by prolonged screen time, promoting eye comfort and health.

Don't forget the 20-20-20 rule

Furthermore, Dr. Duncan underscores the importance of taking regular breaks from screens. Every 20 to 30 minutes, it is advisable to step away from your computer or device to give your eyes a rest. This simple habit can significantly reduce the risk of experiencing visual discomfort, headaches, and dry eyes associated with prolonged screen exposure.

UV light protection is key

Additionally, for individuals, whose occupations involve spending extended periods outdoors, protecting their eyes from harmful UV light is paramount. Dr. Duncan warns that excessive UV exposure can lead to various ocular pathologies, including cataracts, dry eyes, and macular degeneration. To mitigate these risks, he recommends his patients to invest in some high-quality polarized sunglasses with UV protection.” “By shielding your eyes from harmful UV rays, you can safeguard your vision for years to come,” said Dr. Duncan.
