6 Things You Need to Know About Cosmetic Fillers

Full cheeks, smooth skin, plump lips: Some people have them naturally, while others get a little help with dermal fillers. These treatments are increasingly popular thanks to their ability to add volume and decrease wrinkles. Results typically last for six months to a year, depending on the location of the injection.

  1. We use fillers made from hyaluronic acid (HA), naturally found in the skin. Thanks to HA’s ability to store moisture, hyaluronic acid is responsible for giving skin a plump, hydrated look. Once injected, it can add to the natural plumping action, or replenish your body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid, which diminishes as you age.
  2. One injection can make skin look plumper, smoother. One of the reasons injectable hyaluronic acid-based injections are so effective is that research suggests that injections may stimulate collagen production, leading to naturally fresher-looking skin in the long run.
  3. Good filler is invisible. When expertly injected, filler should look natural. The goal is subtle, imperceptible changes that rejuvenate the face.
  4. It matters who does your filler. Injection is an art, so it’s key to seek out a board-certified doctor with a high level of experience.
  5. Fillers can be used for prevention. Starting relatively young may have benefits. It’s sometimes better to prevent than to correct.
  6. Different fillers do different things. While the bulk of filler is made with hyaluronic acid, different particle sizes will deliver different results. For example, Restylane Lyft has larger particle sizes that have the heft to “rebuild” thinned cheekbones, while a smaller particle size works better for addressing fine lines and plumping lips.
