Dr. Kim Laan graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry in 2014. After graduating from optometry school, she completed a residency in Pediatrics and Binocular Vision also at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry. During her residency, she gained experience in the management of amblyopia (lazy eye), vision therapy, pediatric eye disease, and low vision. She also worked frequently with special needs children, including those with an autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and traumatic brain injury. In 2015, Dr. Laan was awarded the Fellowship of the American Academy of Optometry.
Dr. Laan grew up in southern Louisiana. She obtained her undergraduate degree in biology, with a minor in Spanish, from Spring Hill College, where she graduated cum laude and was on the women's golf team.
She and her husband, Dan, were married in 2016 in Birmingham. They have a daughter, Rosemary, who was born while they were living in Minnesota. Dr. Laan enjoys spending time with family, traveling, cooking, sports, and being outdoors.
