Restylane® can be used to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth. If you are just starting your research on cosmetic dermal fillers, please feel free to review all the website pages of this section. Large or deep wrinkles, creases, folds, loss of youthful contours, hollows, acne scars – these can be treated with dermal fillers. Dermal fillers can also be effective for lip enhancement and chin shaping and generally restore the effects of aging.

What are Dermal Facial Fillers?

Dermal fillers are body-friendly substances such as collagen and hyaluronic acid, found naturally in the tissues of the body, which are injected into skin areas to restore volume and suppleness. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance between the skin cells that holds moisture and provides fullness. Skin that looks wrinkled or dry from over-exposure to sunlight is largely due to the fact that the cells have ceased making Hyaluronic acid. Aging also affects the production of Hyaluronic acid. Unlike collagen fillers, hyaluronic acid fillers do not require an allergy test before they are injected and rarely cause an allergic reaction.

The dermal fillers hand-selected by Dr. Neufeld are as follows:

  • Restylane®
  • Juvederm®

You may have heard about Restylane® but might not be sure what it is and if it can help you solve your wrinkle problems. Many physicians all over the world have been using Restylane® to help patients who want a more youthful look. According to the manufacturer, Restylane® has been used in over 3 million treatments and in over 70 countries. This product is approved for use in the United States for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds.

As previously mentioned, Restylane® is a hyaluronic acid-based injectable dermal filler, which lasts about six to nine months. Because it is not animal-based, there is no allergy testing required prior to treatment. Hyaluronic acid is a protein found in the joints and tissues of all living things. Restylane® is soft, holds its shape, and does not form lumps.

How Does Restylane® Work?

Restylane® adds volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Restylane® works immediately by adding volume to smooth away wrinkles. A clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, Restylane® is specifically formulated to act like your body’s own hyaluronic acid. So, you can use Restylane® to visibly reduce moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds for a younger-looking you.

Restylane® was originally developed in Sweden and has been in use in the world market since the year 1996. Recently it has been approved for use in the United States and has been gaining in popularity ever since. The active ingredient in Juvederm® dermal filler, hyaluronic acid, is a naturally occurring, biodegradable complex sugar found in the human body and in all living organisms. Among other things, hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin and adds volume, contributing to the overall appearance of the skin.

The ability of cells to produce hyaluronic acid diminishes with age, often resulting in the formation of facial wrinkles and folds as the skin loses volume. Juvederm® is administered in small doses by intradermal injection directly into facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (the folds running from the sides of the bottom of the nose to the outer corners of the mouth), temporarily filling and augmenting the treated area.

After Your Juvederm® Treatment

Many people are worried about recovery after dermal filler injections. You may be happy to know that the recovery period after a Juvederm® procedure is minimal. There may be possible side effects like redness, swelling and discomfort at the injection site which tend to subside within several days. Occasionally, a bruise may be present which may take several days to resolve.

How Long Can You Expect These Results to Last?

The results of Juvederm® last about six to nine months depending on the location. Thomas Eye Group has dedicated a complete section of our medical practice for medical aesthetic treatments. Sciton® Forever Young BBL™ Skin Resurfacing

Sciton Logo

The root cause of many common skin issues (i.e. acne, redness, and hyperpigmentation) originates below the surface of the skin, rendering topical treatments ineffective. To successfully treat these skin problems would require an advanced treatment powerful enough to reach the deeper skin layers without damaging the epidermis (outermost layer of the skin). Fortunately, the Sciton Forever Young BBL™ (broadband light) treatment is designed to safely and effectively treat skin conditions at their source and utilizes low-frequency photo-thermal energy to gently and safely heat the inner layers of the skin.

When damaged skin cells absorb this photo-thermal energy, they become stimulated to generate new collagen (a vital component of healthy, youthful skin). Forever Young BBL™ treatments are designed to address and correct a number of cosmetic skin issues, including, but not limited to:

  • Acne or acne-related scars
  • Age or sun spots
  • Scar revision
  • Uneven skin pigmentation, tone or texture
  • Moles or telangiectasia (spider veins)
  • Broken capillaries or redness (erythema)
  • Rosacea
  • Fine lines

Sciton® MicroLaserPeel™

Sciton® laser technology reduces the appearance of skin conditions associated with aging, sun damage, keratosis, pigment irregularities, and scarring through MicroLaserPeel™ treatment. Sciton® MicroLaserPeel™ uses an Erbium laser to create a skin resurfacing system that delivers light energy to target the upper layers of skin. Deeper Erbium treatments can improve the appearance of acne scars and the signs of aging. The MicroLaserPeel™ improves skin texture and tone, leaving patients with a clearer complexion and a healthy glow.

The NanoLaserPeel™ from Sciton® is one of the most advanced methods of treating patients who want to enjoy beautiful skin. The NanoLaserPeel™ uses light energy to instantly remove the top layers of the skin to create beautifully smooth, luminous skin. There are many benefits to the NanoLaserPeel™ including fast treatment and little downtime.

Sciton® BroadBand Light™ Phototherapy

Sciton® BroadBand Light™ (BBL) is an innovative, light-based technology that uses pulses of light energy to gently remove acne, uneven skin texture, skin discoloration, vascular lesions, and unwanted hair. Sciton® BBL™ can treat any area of the body, with the most common areas being the face, neck, and shoulders. The treatment areas will be gently heated to stimulate collagen production and to restore skin to a more youthful appearance. Additionally, Sciton® produces photothermal energy to eliminate small blood vessels that contribute to exaggerated redness and sun damage.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is a non-invasive surgical procedure that softens lines and wrinkles, removes surface imperfections, and tightens and rejuvenates the skin. It is safer, longer-lasting, more effective and more predictable than dermabrasion or chemical peels. Results are seen immediately and continue to improve during the healing process.

How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?

Laser skin resurfacing involves the use of the fractionated laser. The laser will create microscopic holes in the skin. This enables the skin surface to heal quickly, usually within several days. During this time and during the next several weeks, the collagen fibers under the surface of the skin are being regenerated. The collagen in the skin gives skin its integrity and structure. Essentially, the old dry and damaged skin cells and collagen are replaced with new cells and collagen fibers. This results in skin that appears more supple, youthful and healthy.

Following the treatment, no bandages are applied. A thick layer of Aquaphor™ ointment (a very bland moisturizer like Vaseline) is applied to the skin and is left untouched for 24 hours. After this, patients use vinegar and water soaks several times per day for the next 7 days. The vinegar serves as a natural antibiotic and antifungal aimed at preventing infections. At that time, the skin has healed enough to enable patients to apply sunblock and moisturizer along with makeup. The skin may appear slightly pink for several weeks and this is normal.

Patients are usually seen 3 days after the procedure then at 10 days, 1 month and at 3 months. Of course, if there are any concerns, questions or issues that a patient has, they are seen whenever they need without delay.

Will I Need to Take Time Off Work?

Most people will need at least one week off from work to heal from laser skin resurfacing. Each day the skin will begin to look better and better. After approximately 7 days, makeup can be used to cover the pinkness of the skin. This pinkness typically lasts for several weeks and is a visible sign that the newer, tighter and smoother collagen is replacing the old damaged collagen. Laser Hair Removal

Sciton® BBL™ laser hair removal delivers photothermal energy to hair follicles to impede future growth. This Sciton® technology can also be used to address other skin conditions such as acne, scars, and pigmented lesions. BBL™ can treat multiple hair follicles at a time, minimizing treatment times. A series of treatments, spaced 4-8 weeks apart, is typically required for the best results. This laser is also ideal for patients with active lifestyles, as it safely treats most skin types and has virtually no downtime.
