Scam Alert: $250/ Eye LASIK

You’ve seen the advertisements for $220- $250 per eye for extremely discounted LASIK procedures. You’re probably thinking something like “But how? I thought this was an elective procedure. And these are my eyes…is it safe if the price is so low?”

The truth is that the $220- $250 per Eye LASIK scheme is exactly that- a scheme, and this is how it works: Corporate LASIK discount centers price their LASIK procedures based on the patient’s prescription. A procedure priced at $220-$250 per eye aligns with a prescription of less than one diopter of nearsightedness with NO astigmatism.  

Ok, so what does this mean?   

Well, most people who have less than one diopter of nearsightedness and no astigmatism barely even need to wear prescription glasses, if at all, and they certainly do not need LASIK. Not to mention that people with less than one diopter of nearsightedness and no astigmatism account for 1% of the general population. So, if you have less than one diopter of nearsightedness and absolutely no astigmatism, then you might qualify for the $220-$250 per eye pricing for a procedure that you don’t even need. If this is not you, and you have a more substantial prescription, an astigmatism, and are actually a good candidate for LASIK, you will be paying much more than $220-$250 per eye.

Moral of the story? Don’t take the bait. If you are thinking about getting the procedure, be sure to do your research. Make sure

you find a highly skilled and experienced surgeon with a great track record of successful surgeries. LASIK is a wonderful and liberating procedure for those who need it and qualify for it, but when it comes to your vision and eye health, be sure to weigh quality equally as much, if not more than dollar quantity.
