Retina and Vitreous Specialist
Paul L Kaufman, M.D. is board-certified in ophthalmology and fellowship-trained as a specialist in retina/vitreous medicine and surgery.
A native of Atlanta, Dr. Kaufman joined the Thomas Eye Group in June 2004. Dr. Kaufman sees patients in our Atlanta location. He provides care for children and adults with a wide variety of retinal conditions, including retinopathy of prematurity, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, macular pucker/hole, and retinal vascular occlusions, among many others.
Dr. Kaufman graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Maryland. He then graduated from the Medical College of Georgia with honors and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Kaufman completed a general surgery internship at the Medical University of South Carolina and an ophthalmology residency at MUSC’s Storm Eye Institute. He received the Helma research award for outstanding research in the area of retinopathy of prematurity and served as the chief resident.
Dr. Kaufman received his fellowship training in Birmingham, Alabama, where he completed a clinical fellowship in vitreoretinal disease and surgery and research fellowships given by the Helen Keller Foundation for Research and Education and the American Society of Ocular Trauma. In 2003, Dr Kaufman lectured throughout China as representative of the Helen Keller Foundation.
Before joining Thomas Eye Group, Dr. Kaufman was in private practice in Birmingham, Alabama, where he also served as Clinical Instructor on the faculty of the University of Alabama Department of Ophthalmology. Currently, Dr. Kaufman is Chairman of the Ophthalmology section at Northside Hospital. He is also an active member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Kaufman lives in Dunwoody with his wife and children.
