Dr. Thomas was born in New York and moved to Atlanta, Georgia , at age 12. He graduated from Marist Schools in Atlanta, and received both his B.A. and M.D. degree from Emory University. Following graduation from Medical School he interned at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta. From 1972 through 1974 Dr. Thomas served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, where he held the position of Chief of Hospital Clinics.
From 1974-1977 he was a Resident in ophthalmology at Emory affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta. After completing his residency, he went into private practice in North Atlanta. In 1978 he founded the Thomas Eye Group.
Thomas Eye Group began with one ophthalmologist and two employees in 1978 and has grown to 18 ophthalmologists and one optometrist and over 200 employees. TEG has grown from one office to its current 8 offices located throughout the Atlanta area.
As one of the first surgeons in Georgia to perform redial keratomomy, Dr. Thomas was also one of the first surgeons in the country to perform LASIK, and was an early investigator for the FDA to determine the safety and efficacy of LASIK. Over the years Dr. Thomas has been an instructor in many courses for other physicians teaching advanced methods of cataract surgery, radial keratotomy, and LASIK. He was a Clinical Associate Instructor in ophthalmology at Emory University.
For the last several years Dr. Thomas has had the honor of being selected by Atlanta Magazine as one of its "TOP DOCS".
