What Is Normal Vision and What is Not?

By studying lots of people, it has been determined that"normal" vision is being able to see a certain size line on the eye chart (the Snellen Chart) from 20 feet away. If you have 20/20 vision that means that when you stand 20 feet away from the chart you can see what a"normal" human being can see at 20 feet. If you have 20/40 vision at 20 feet, a person with normal vision could see the same at 40 feet. So, the top number refers to the distance you stand from the chart, and the bottom number is the distance a person with normal vision could read the same line you correctly read – the larger the bottom number, the worse the vision.
