Accommodating IOL

  • 98.4% could see well enough to read the newspaper and the phone book without glasses.
  • 100% could see intermediate  distances (24" to 30") without glasses, the distance for most of life's activities
  • 98.4% of patients implanted with Crystalens in both eyes could pass a driver's test without glasses
  • Some patients did require glasses for some tasks after implantation of the Crystalens
  • Significantly more patients implanted with a Crystalens (88.4%) could see better at all distances than patients implanted with a standard IOL (35.9%)

HOW DOES THE Crystalens® IOL WORK?

CrystalensAfter the age of 40 people will often start to experience difficulty reading as the eye’s natural lens starts to harden. Prior to this many people often experience excellent vision and are typically confused as to what is happening with their eyes. Because their vision may have been perfect they have never consulted an ophthalmologist as to what is naturally occurring. This inability to see at close distances or difficulty for the muscles in the eye to auto-focus can be very discouraging. This is known as loss of accommodation, or presbyopia. The Crystalens was engineered with a hinge design to allow the optic, or part of the lens that you see through, to move back and forth as your focus on an image changes.

Quick facts on Crystalens®

  • Patients who are good candidates for standard monofocal IOLs are typically good candidates for Crystalens. If a patient has healthy eyes, has not had previous cataract surgery, and does not suffer from any major health problems, then he or she is likely to be a good candidate.
  • More than twice the number of patients implanted with Crystalens could see well at all distances compared to a standard IOL.
  • Most Crystalens patients have reduced their dependence on glasses and are able to read the newspaper or a phone book without glasses.
  • Most Crystalens patients are able to see their computers, dashboards and anything else at arm’s length without glasses.
  • Most Crystalens patients are able to see 20/40 or better after surgery, so the clock across the room and the TV in the corner are clearly within sight.
  • Many of our Crystalens patients can see well enough to do away with their reading glasses, bifocals, or contact lenses.
  • The Crystalens procedure is highly successful and most people regain very good distance vision, somewhere between 20/20 and 20/40. Are you seeking an Atlanta Crystalens specialist? If so please contact one of offices to arrange for a consultation regarding whether or not Crystalens is right for you.

Recently Announced (January 2010)

Bausch & Lomb has released a new more advanced version of the Crystalens®.

The Crystalens AO has prolate aspheric surfaces and is designed to be free of spherical aberration. It is designed to improve retinal image quality without compromising depth of field and therefore provides greater quality of distance and intermediate vision. Please feel free to download the Crystalens® AO brochure here.
